Dear Editor,

I am not opposed to the Government's ban on scandal bags. However, I am incensed at the Government's criminalising the use of plastic bags by the hefty fines and even imprisonment.

I get it that they expect these fines to have us toe the line, and they have never heard of the carrot and stick theory. However, what they are doing is passing the buck because they are unable to provide reliable garbage collection services.

In my area, garbage collection is unreliable as the truck comes every two to three weeks on any random day of the week.

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), in its latest bit of advice, suggests that we box the garbage or put in drums. So, what happens when the rain falls and the box gets wet? What happens when the stray dogs that roam the streets turn over the drums?

All I ask in the age of no plastic is for the NSWMA to provide a reliable collection schedule. Whatever the frequency, if the it's the second Tuesday that is the pick-up day, then come on that day so households can prepare for them.

Do your job, NSWMA!
