No respect for the environment

Dear Editor,

I read the Jamaica Observer article in the Wednesday, July 11, 2018 edition, entitled 'Massive shock! EU ambassador calls out Jamaica on poor solid waste disposal', and offer these words.

John Pringle, founder of Round Hill and first head of the Jamaica Tourist Board, said back in the 1960s that part of the reason he was leaving Jamaica was his disgust at all the trash and litter around the island. He found it sadly ironic that a country and people who struggled long and hard for their independence would disrespect their beautiful country with so much litter.

Jamaicans like to throw around the word “respect”, but show little for their country's appearance.

And where 40 per cent of gross domestic product is attributable to tourism, you would think the Jamaicans may want to put forward a strong effort on cleanliness and beauty.

Keep at it, environmentalists; keep repeating your message. It is constructive criticism, and it is needed.
