Dear Editor,

Trevor Parchment, a throwback to a bygone age of sports versatility inconceivable in this modern era of specialisation, has died in Toronto, Canada. He had been ailing for some time. He was 88.

Parchment, as a schoolboy at Munro College, represented Jamaica's senior national football team against Haiti in 1949, months before winning the pole vault event at 1950 Boys' Champs.

In the mid-50s he was a standout on the hockey field against Jamaica's archrivals Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago while representing Jamaica in football. He was also an excellent gymnast.

After honing his coaching skills in Denmark, he piloted Munro to the daCosta Cup title in 1957 and in 1960 was at the helm when Excelsior captured what is still its only Boys' Champs title.
