KINGSTON, Jamaica — A new tropical storm, which formed in the eastern Atlantic on Friday, is expected to become a hurricane by Sunday.

The Meteorological (Met) Service of Jamaica reported today that at 4:00 am, Tropical Storm Helene was located near latitude 13.7 North, longitude 19.6 West or 530 km east southeast of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands.

The storm's maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 km/h with higher gusts and additional strengthening is forecast for the next couple of days.

Met Service said Helene is moving toward the west near 20 km/h, and this general motion will likely continue through the weekend.

Helene will pass very close to the southern Cabo Verde Islands late tonight and early Sunday, forecasters said.

Meanwhile, a gradual turn toward the west northwest with an increase in forward speed is expected early next week.

Tropical Storm Helene is not a threat to Jamaica at this time.
