KINGSTON, Jamaica — One hundred and sixty-six farmers in St Thomas and St Andrew are now certified in climate smart farming techniques to improve their produce while protecting their lands and the island's water supply.

According to an advisory from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), the farmers have successfully completed a 13-week climate smart land husbandry training called Farmer Field School. The programme is geared towards farmers learning and implementing techniques that lessen soil erosion and water contamination as well as prevent and manage forest fires.

The agency said the farmers form part of the severely degraded Yallahs River and Hope River watershed management units that account for 7 per cent of the island's farm lands and supply almost half of the potable water in the Kingston Metropolitan Area and its environs.

A graduation ceremony for the farmers will be held at the Mona Visitors' Lodge Conference Centre at 10:00 am tomorrow.
