A 'fit and proper' force

Dear Editor,

I wish to join the chorus of support for our new Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson and to wish him success in his onerous task.

Beyond that, I offer a suggestion to help him prepare for change: Institute an annual physical exercise test for all ranks to ensure that they can function in the field effectively. Have them jog around the National Stadium's track in less than eight minutes or climb the Bank of Jamaica steps without stopping, for example.

Policemen, like airline pilots, must be fit if they are to perform properly — not muscle-bound fit, but in good physical condition. Those that are not should be honourably retired. The job is very stressful and retirement at 60 should be the norm, if it is not already so.
