Dear Editor,

On weekdays and weekends there is traffic congestion in front of the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). Vans and trucks delivering to the numerous shacks, and taxi drivers who stop to load passengers block the narrow thoroughfare, bring buses, ambulances and people trying to get to school and work to a virtual crawl.

The unsightly development of the squatter community, with dwellings and shops less than three feet from the main road with windows that literally open onto the sidewalk also compound the congestion.

People are going to die in that traffic while trying to get to hospital. With all the road widening now being done across the city, the road in front of UHWI should be at the top of the list.
