Dear Editor,

Columnist Melissa Martin wrote an interesting article published in the Jamaica Observer on December 27, 2018 — 'The same beginning — what happened?' — but may I be so bold as to suggest an answer to the question in the title.

Here's the answer to your question? Conflict.

That is, Jesus antagonised the Jewish leading rabbis over the meaning and practice of the Torah.

The Jews stressed the importance of the mosaic law.

Jesus, on the other hand, stressed compassion and love.

Jesus irritated the Jews, so they had to get rid of him.

Muhammad and the Qur'an accused Jews and Christians of corrupting the Scriptures and dividing themselves into different factions.

That it was wrong to worship Jesus as God, for there is only one God — Allah.

So, for Muhammad, both groups had to be brought back to the right path — Islam (submission to the will of Allah).

So where these three monotheistic religions went astray is in their different perceptions and interpretations about the demands of the Supreme.
