MEMBERS of the public can access free eye screening today, Thursday, January 24, and tomorrow, Friday January 25 at the Sagicor Life head office in New Kingston, as part of a campaign to raise awareness about critical eye conditions, particularly glaucoma.

The initiative is the first in a series of eye screenings to be conducted islandwide by Sagicor Life, in collaboration with Courts Optical.

The screening sessions today and tomorrow will be conducted from 8:00am to 4:00pm at the Client Service Area of the Sagicor Life on Barbados Avenue. Follow-up screenings will be conducted at all Courts Optical locations in the upcoming weeks.

The screenings coincide with the rollout of a digital and social media campaign by Sagicor Life in observance of January as Glaucoma Awareness Month, which aims to educate people about the disease and encourage regular screening.

Assistant vice-president, Individual Life Sales and Distribution, Sagicor Life, Philbert Perry, said Sagicor is committed to promoting health and wellness in the communities it serves and is looking to partner with the public in this drive to raise awareness about the importance of getting treated early for conditions such as glaucoma.

“Glaucoma is considered a sneak thief of sight, because it might not present symptoms until it is too late; as such we want to help persons get screened so the condition can be treated early,” he said.

“We, at Sagicor, know that healthy eyesight is an important aspect of overall health and we want to continue to do our part in the promotion of wellness,” Perry added.

In addition to the release of video and graphic content on web and social media platforms to raise awareness about glaucoma, Sagicor Life will also be hosting a live interview session with director of the Glaucoma Association of Jamaica and glaucoma survivor, Tonian McDonald, on January 30. McDonald, who authors the book Living with Glaucoma, is collaborating with Sagicor Life during the month, as a brand ambassador for health and wellness. She will be joined by fellow survivor, 25-year-old Tiffany Rattary, who will speak to the challenges of experiencing the disease at a young age.

Sagicor Life will also be offering giveaways in partnership with Courts Optical as part of its social media campaign.

Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to the eye's optic nerves and gets worse over time. It is often linked to a build-up of pressure inside the eye. Without treatment, glaucoma can cause permanent loss of sight within a few years.

According to the World Health Organization, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, of which the Caribbean ranks amongst the highest.
