Lucky escape!

SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — As gunshots rang out at the commercial centre of this town last Monday leaving two people dead, one man who was test driving a car with a view to buying it barely escaped with his life.

The Jamaica Observer was told that as the prospective car buyer manoeuvred the vehicle in the busy plaza where Lotoya Williamson and Warrenton Barham died, he heard gunshots. He spun around just in time to see the rear windscreen of the motor car shattering, apparently on being hit by stray bullets.

Bent low, his eyes barely seeing over the dashboard, the man drove at high speed from the plaza. He later discovered bullet holes in the interior of the car, including the head rests of passenger seats.

Williamson, a 25-year-old hotel sales rep, was shot dead by Barham, police said. He, in turn, a businessman and former candidate for the Jamaica Labour Party in the parish council elections of 2007 and 2012, was challenged and shot dead by police immediately after.
