JAMAICA Labour Party (JLP) candidate for the St Andrew North Western by-election Dr Nigel Clarke on Monday outlined his plans for the constituency he will vie for on March 5.

Clarke was speaking to members of the media following his nomination at the Pembroke Hall Community Centre when he said that he plans to continue the work done by former Member of Parliament Derrick Smith throughout his 29-year stint.

“I plan to address the roads in the constituency. I have plans for youth empowerment; plans to ensure that green spaces are turned into areas that citizens can enjoy. The most important thing is to bring sincerity, compassion, the predisposition to listen, and to be there for the citizens and residents of North West St Andrew,” Clarke shared.

According to him, he brings to the constituency a wide and diverse platform of leadership experience in the public sector at the highest level, and with that experience a spirit of compassion, a willingness to listen and a predisposition to working very hard on behalf of others.

Clarke was given the nod to represent the party over Smith's son, Duane, who is councillor for the Chancery Hall Division of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation.

He will run against the Opposition People's National Party's Keisha Hayle.

Meanwhile, party chairman and minister of national security, Robert Montague denied rumours that Clarke's selection has caused a division in the ruling party.

“The only division we speak to are the three parish council divisions in the constituency and we are going to win them. That's the only division we know about,” Montague said, adding that talks of Smith withdrawing his support for Clarke are “fake news”.

“It was Duane Smith, the son of Derrick Smith, who paid the nomination fee for Dr Clarke, and is with him right here so that's the living evidence. …We are moving forward; that's what we are doing, and on election day Dr Nigel Clarke will be the new Member of Parliament to serve the good people of North West St Andrew, and he will continue the record of service Derrick has here. Derrick has an excellent track record and Dr Clarke will continue and build on that foundation…” the party chairman said.
