Boosting school leadership

MANDEVILLE, Manchester — An educator for more than thirty years, now holding the title as LASCO principal of the year and presented with a platform to make greater impact, Howard Salmon recently launched a mentorship programme for colleagues.

Salmon, who is currently the principal of Mandeville Primary School, said that the knowledge sharing format will be through webinars — seminars via the Internet — in order to ensure that those interested are not restrained by time and space.

The programme referred to as the Principal's Mentorship Webinar Seminar is pitched to benefit beginning principals, aspiring principals and vice-principals.

Renee Rose, LASCO brand manager, applauded Salmon and other school leaders and educators.

“If you consider that a great principal builds character, inspires dreams, encourages creativity, builds confidence, instils a lot of learning, touches hearts and changes lives forever, it is not a small task …,” she said.

Dr Winsome Gordon, chief executive officer of the Jamaica Teaching Council, challenged Salmon to foster within the digital space not only discussions about the traditional concerns in education but societal issues such as protection of the environment.

Georgia Waugh-Richards, immediate past president of the Jamaica Teachers' Association and principal of Harmon's Primary, related how Salmon, then an education officer, invested in her growth in her early days as a principal.

“…He poured in me, he invested in me. He is well-rounded as it relates to management and supervision of schools. He never enters an institution and leaves it the same, he has an imprint in so many institutions in Manchester…,” she said.

Waugh-Richards said Salmon's project was timely as the society is demanding so much more from leaders in education.

Salmon urged that in addition to the formal opportunities for growth and development in the profession, educators should be proactive and never forego opportunities to lead.
