Dear Orchid Doc:

I truly appreciate the Dinah Shore Orchid. It blooms up to six spikes at once and never sheds a leaf like the others. There's just one thing, however: a spot that refuses to budge! I have tried every available chemical to no avail. Help!

Ashley

Dear Ashley:

I myself, have many Dinah Shores. They are prolific bloomers and, yes I am aware of this mark. What I have observed is the more sun Miss Dinah Shore is exposed to, the more spots there are. Do remember that Mokaras don't really need much sun to bloom. That said, I was recently told that Dianthane fungicide works well to keep off the fungus from the new growth. You might not be able to clean up the ones you have, but you can certainly prevent future ones.

Dear Orchid Doc:

My housekeeper has been over-watering my Phalaenopsis orchids. As a result, the roots appear water-logged. How can I ward off fungus? FYI they were planted in moss.

KOG

Dear KOG

Take them out the moss immediately. Trim the roots and apply some fungicide preferably the dry powder variety. Lay the orchid up naked for a few days. Do not expose to any form of water. When the roots appear to be back to normal, pot them in charcoal and stones.
