I remember my very first pair of Kate Spade mules. It was purchased in the '90s, in Gotham of course. I was there for the Summer Fancy Food show at the Jacob Javits Center and had spent my last day in the city at Bergdorf's as dictated by our beloved Carrie Bradshaw. You see, before the Kardashians, dear millenials, Sex and the City influenced all things style, food, beverages, and dare we suggest, SEX!!

It's ironic really that as we ready to celebrate 20 years of female friendships we grieve the death of Katherine Noel Brosnahan, known in the fashion circle as Kate Spade or Kate Valentine.

I remained not entirely devoted to the label but most definitely in touch. Indeed, her Chelsea location in London became my secret haunt. I must confess that shoes, cardis and notebooks were my obsessions. My sister Jacqueline loved her handbags and daisy summer frocks. Even Kristin Davis' Sex and the City character Charlotte York MacDougal Goldenblatt (both those weddings were something) once lamented that she had to forgo bringing tampons to an event as they did not fit in her Kate Spade purse. Talk about fashion over everything.

Those very first Kate Spades stepped onto the work site of The Ritz Carlton, Rosehall, Montego Bay and elicited a warm welcome from the property's first GM Douglas Brooks. Yes Jacqueline Sangster that's how I met your hubby and commenced my affair with The Ritz. I wore those shoes until it became futile taking them to the cobbler. When news of Spade's death hit Tuesday I wanted to seek solace in those shoes... Ironically, I was wearing a pair of Kate Spade slingbacks. Few knew that she no longer helmed the brand but the name remained the magnet.

As with all matters of style we afford La Grande Dame the final words... “Kate Spade had an enviable gift for understanding exactly what women the world over wanted to carry.” — Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief, Vogue

Breaking!!!!

Barely over the shock of Spade's passing, we were awakened Friday morning with the news that Anthony Bourdain, no stranger to our beloved shores, had allegedly committed suicide!

Cheers to you, Bourdain... in Parts Unknown.
