Take it from us at the Under The Dryer desk: great-looking skin is achievable as long as you are prepared to put in the work! A recent session with Marie Hall-Smith, managing director of the award-winning spa and cosmetology school The Face Place, left us not only with glowing, radiant skin but also enough products to handle our own skin routine in between our next visit. Taking good care of your skin in the summer involves 5 essential steps:

Cleanse: Use a cleanser that is suited for your skin type: gel, foam or cream-based are best choices for the summer months.

Tone: This step is often left out and is most important in balancing the skin's pH. A balancing cleansing water or toner with no alcohol is good for all skin types in the summer.

Moisturise: All skin types need moisture, especially when we lose water through perspiration as we do in the summer. TEWL (transepidermal water loss) is best restored when we use water based moisturisers to hydrate as part of our skin regimen mornings and evenings.

Treat: Skin conditions when apparent should never go untreated. One of the most common skin conditions that tend to flare in the summer is eczema. Adopting a home-care regimen that involves a treatment suited for this condition will keep your skin looking and feeling as it should despite the weather.

Protect: Protecting our skin using an SPF of 30 or higher will guard against the photo damage that UVA and UVB rays cause.

Knowing your skin type is where you start in identifying what will suit your needs best. Having your skin professionally analysed through consultation with an aesthetician will give you the knowledge needed for making informed choices for a good skin home-care regimen. Scheduling a facial should involve a consultation in which a treatment and home care regimen are identified that will ultimately give you multiple benefits in maintaining the best health for your face!

Two regulars at the Face Place are educator and motivational speaker Nicole McLaren- Campbell and entrepreneur and media personality Yendi Phillipps. McLaren-Campbell's facial ritual consists of Collagen Facial and Celluma Red Light Therapy to keep her eczema under control; she also keeps up diligently with her homecare regime even when she travels. Globetrotter Phillipps takes good care of her skin through her diet and does a combination of microdermabrasion and phototherapy facials, two to three times a year, to brighten and rehydrate her skin.
