Tots & Teens Hairport Salon officially opened its doors on December 23, 2016, when Shaneka Burrell sought to manage her very own natural hair kiddie salon. As early as the first appointment to the last walk-in customer before 7:00 pm, Burrell and her staff of three weave their brand of magic on the locks of children. Under the Dryer learns more…

Surprisingly, Burrell started braiding hair since the age of eight. “I would always be asked to comb neighbours' hair, my friend's hair at school, and all my family members would come over or call me over to get their hair done.” Seems like a big deal and a lot of work for a child then, but for Burrell, it was a cake walk and a passion project.

She became an assistant hairstylist circa 2003 and had always dreamt of having her own salon specialising in hairstyles for kids. Five years later, she stepped out in faith and started her own business by renting a booth at Bridgette Beauty Salon. In 2016, after saving enough to move into her own space, she opened Tots & Teens Hairport Salon at Shop 3A, Caribbean Estate Plaza in Portmore — a spot she's found to be convenient and kid-friendly.

Executing a hairstyle perfectly and seeing the children's smiles are the best parts of her job, Burrell stated. “It warms my heart seeing the little faces, knowing I created the styles makes me joyful.”

The most requested styles at Tots & Teens are basic twists, variations of cornrow styles, and during the hot summer months, braids or extensions to add length. The average shampoo-and -braid combo ranges from $2,000 and upwards, with an additional charge for detangling, washing, adding beads, adding extensions, and other options.

Burrell is eyeing Ocho Rios for her second location with a long-term goal of Tots & Teens Hairport Salon chains islandwide.

Tots & Teens is primarily for children but accepts all clients, particularly during the week when school is in session.

Tots & Teens Hairport Salon is open Sunday to Sunday, 10:30 am to 7:00 pm.
